Why a Drop Point for Hunting?

A drop point is the most widely used hunting profile for a reason. The spine runs straight from the handle and then curves gently down to meet the tip, which brings the point below the line of the spine.

A lowered point is strong, since there is plenty of steel behind it, and controllable, since it sits close to the center line of the blade. It is also less likely to puncture something you want intact when you are field dressing, which is the main reason hunters favour it over a clip point.

What Does the Fuller Do?

The groove running along the upper blade is a fuller. Removing steel from the flat, where it contributes least to stiffness, reduces the blade's weight while leaving the spine and edge at full strength. The effect is the same principle as an I-beam.

On an 8 inch blade the saving is noticeable in the hand. It pulls the balance point back toward the bolster, so the knife feels quicker and less nose-heavy than an unfullered blade of the same length.

What Is D2 Tool Steel?

D2 is a high-carbon high-chromium tool steel carrying roughly 11 to 13 percent chromium alongside molybdenum and vanadium. It was developed for industrial cutting dies and holds an edge exceptionally well, which matters on a hunting knife expected to finish a job without resharpening.

What Do the Bolster and Pommel Add?

The cast bolster at the front of the handle extends into a small finger stop below the grip. On a hunting knife that stop matters, since hands get wet and slippery during field work and the stop keeps the index finger from sliding forward onto the edge.

A white spacer separates the bolster from the dark wood. At the butt, a polished pommel caps the handle and adds mass behind the hand, and the lanyard hole through it lets you secure the knife to your wrist or hang it.

How Should You Care for It?

The blade

Wipe the blade after use, especially after field dressing, and wash with mild soap and warm water. Dry it fully and apply a thin coat of mineral oil before storage. D2 tolerates much more than a carbon steel, but blood and moisture left on it will still cause pitting.

The handle

Keep the wood dry and avoid soaking. Treat it occasionally with a food-safe oil so the grain does not dry out around the bolster and pommel.

Storage

Store the knife in its box rather than its sheath. Leather holds humidity against steel, while the box keeps the blade dry and protected.

Sharpening
