What Makes a Knife a Skinner?

A skinning knife is defined by two features working together, and both are visible on this blade.

The first is the belly, the curved section of cutting edge running from the middle of the blade toward the point. Separating hide from meat is done with long sweeping strokes, and a curved edge keeps more steel in contact with the work through each pass than a straight one would.

The second is the dropped point. The spine curves down to meet the tip, bringing the point below the line of the spine. A low point is less likely to catch or puncture what you are trying to keep intact, which matters far more when skinning than when cutting on a board.

Is 440C a Good Steel for a Hunting Knife?

440C is a high-carbon stainless steel, carrying roughly 1 percent carbon and 16 to 18 percent chromium. The carbon allows it to harden properly, and the chromium makes it genuinely stainless rather than merely rust-resistant.

At approximately 60 HRC it sits at the upper end of the normal working range for the steel. That hardness holds an edge well through a field dressing session and still sharpens without specialist abrasives.

The practical advantage over a carbon steel is maintenance. A 440C blade tolerates blood, moisture, and a day in a pack in a way that 1095 simply does not. It will still spot if left dirty and wet for long enough, since stainless resists corrosion rather than being immune to it, but the margin for error is much wider. What Is Stag Antler?

In the knife trade, stag means antler, and the rough textured surface you see on the handle is the outer layer of the antler, called the bark or pearling. The smoother, lighter section toward the blade is antler where the bark has worn or been worked back.

Antler is shed naturally every year and regrown, so stag handles come from material the animal has already discarded. No animal is killed to produce it.

Stag has been a traditional knife handle for centuries because the natural texture gives a secure grip even when wet or bloody, and because no two pieces look alike. The pattern of pearling, color, and grain on this handle is unique to it.

What Does the Spacer Stack Do?

A stack of black and white spacers sits between the antler and the blade. Beyond the visual line it draws, the stack provides a clean, flat seat where the organic handle material meets the steel, and it seals the end of the antler against moisture at the point where it is most exposed.

What Does the Leather Sheath Provide?

The sheath is hand-dyed in deep red-brown fading to near black at the edges, stitched around the perimeter, and fitted with a belt loop. It is a pouch style, so the handle sits partly inside the sheath and the knife is held by friction rather than a strap.

Clean and dry the blade before it goes back in. Leather holds humidity against steel, so use the sheath for carrying rather than long-term storage, even with a stainless blade.

How Should You Care for a Stag Handle Knife?

The blade

Wipe the blade after use and wash it with mild soap and warm water, then dry it. 440C does not need oiling to prevent rust, though a thin coat before long storage does no harm. Keep it out of the dishwasher.

The antler

Antler is a natural material and responds to its environment. Keep it dry, avoid soaking it, and keep it away from direct heat such as a stove top or a car dashboard in summer, since extreme heat and extreme dryness can both cause fine cracking. An occasional light coat of mineral oil or wax keeps it from drying out.

Sharpening
