What Makes Our Rasp Steel Hawkbill Knife Stand Out?

Our Custom Handmade Rasp Steel Hawkbill Knife is forged from farrier's rasp stock, with the original rasp teeth left standing along the spine and a polished ring pommel finishing the tang.

Most reclaimed rasp blades grind the tooth pattern away and lose the reason anyone wanted rasp steel to begin with. Here the teeth stay proud across the spine and shoulder, so the tool the steel used to be is still legible in the knife it became. More reclaimed blades sit in our rasp steel knives collection.

Why Use Rasp Steel for a Knife?

Farrier's rasps are cut from high carbon tool steel because they have to bite through hoof horn all day without going dull. Reforged, that same stock takes a hard heat treatment and holds a keen edge.

Retained teeth are not only decorative. The pattern gives the thumb something to sit against on the spine, which helps when you are choking up for a controlled cut.

What Is a Hawkbill Blade Shaped For?

The edge sweeps downward, so material gets drawn into the cut rather than pushed away from it. Rope, twine, cordage and hide all part more willingly under a pulling stroke.

Force also gathers near the middle of the curve, close to the knuckles, where hand control is strongest. Buyers who prefer a wide straight edge can compare our bull cutter knives.

What Does the Ring Pommel Do?

The tang finishes in a polished steel ring cut from the same billet, not added on as separate hardware.

Two practical uses follow. A finger through the ring gives positive retention when hands are wet or gloved, and the ring takes a lanyard or a saddle clip without needing a drilled hole.

How Does the Handle Feel?

Cast resin shrugs off moisture, oil and blood without swelling, splitting or drying out, which suits a knife that gets used wet and wiped down afterwards.

Gentle contours give the palm somewhere to settle, so grip security does not rely on squeezing hard. Brass pins run right through the full tang. Related western profiles sit in our cowboy knives range.

What Is a Cross Draw Leather Sheath?

Cross draw carry lays the knife flat across the front of the belt, angled for a clean pull with the opposite hand. Nothing digs in when you sit, ride or bend forward.

Belt slots are cut into the body of the leather rather than stitched on as a loop, keeping the sheath tight to the hip.

Can the Knife Be Custom Engraved?

Personalised engraving is available. Add your text in the Engraving Instructions field before adding to cart, and our makers will apply it by hand.

Names, dates and initials suit the polished ricasso best, since the toothed spine offers no flat surface. Send longer requests or artwork to support@stagsteelknives.com so we can confirm placement before work begins. Engraved pieces are made to order, so allow extra production time.

How Should the Knife Be Maintained?

Wipe the blade dry after use and apply a light coat of oil before storage. High carbon steel spots quickly if left damp, and the toothed spine holds water in the valleys, so dry that area properly.

Condition the leather once or twice a year, and store the knife outside the sheath for long periods.

Why Choose Our Rasp Steel Hawkbill Knife?

Our hawkbill brings together reclaimed farrier's rasp steel at 60 HRC, a retained tooth spine, an integral ring pommel and a tooled cross draw sheath in a 7 inch package. Suited to ranch work, everyday cutting and collectors drawn to reforged tool steel.
