Description
The Predator Bowie in D2 Steel
This is the D2 version of our Predator Bowie, and it's a big one. The blade is 14 inches, the whole knife runs about 19 inches, and it's built for someone who wants a full-size working bowie they can actually beat on, not just look at. Where the Damascus version is about the pattern, this one is about toughness. Black D2 blade, stainless guard and pommel, black Micarta handle, black leather sheath. It's a no-nonsense look and it does what it's supposed to do.
We make these by hand in Canada
Stag Steel Knives has been making knives since 2001. This is a team effort start to finish, all of it done by hand in our Canadian shop, from forging the blade to grinding it, heat-treating it and fitting the handle. There's no factory line involved, so every knife comes out with its own small character. A lot of the big "D2 bowie" knives you see online are mass produced overseas. This isn't one of those, and you can feel the difference when you pick it up.
Why D2 steel
D2 is a tool steel, and it's a favorite for hard-use knives for good reason. It's got a lot of carbon and chromium in it, which means it holds an edge a long time and stands up to heavy cutting without dulling fast. People ask if D2 is good knife steel, and the short answer is yes, especially for a big bowie that's going to see real work. It's not fully stainless though, it's what people call semi-stainless, so it's got better rust resistance than plain carbon steel but it's not bulletproof against moisture. Wipe it down and keep a little oil on it and it'll stay clean for years.
The heat treatment
This is the part worth paying attention to. We don't run the whole blade to one hardness. The edge is heat-treated to 59 to 61 HRC so it gets properly sharp and holds that edge, and the spine is left a little softer on purpose. On a 14 inch blade that's important. Take the whole thing to full hardness and it can get brittle, and a hard knock can chip or crack it. Leaving the spine softer lets the blade flex a bit and absorb a hit instead of snapping. Hard edge up front, tougher back behind it. For a bowie this size that's the way to build it.
The handle and fittings
The handle is black Micarta. Micarta is a tough composite that's a workhorse handle material, it doesn't crack or swell with moisture and it gives you a solid grip even when your hands are wet or cold, which is more than you can say for a lot of wood handles. The guard and the pommel are stainless steel, which keeps the look clean and adds some rust resistance at the ends. At 5.15 inches the handle gives you plenty to hold, and you want that on a knife with 14 inches of blade in front of it.
The sheath
It comes with a black hand-stitched cowhide leather sheath. There's a snap strap to hold the knife in and a tooled edge around it. It keeps the blade protected and rides well on a belt.
