What Makes Our Hand-Forged Damascus Steel Axe Stand Out?

Our Hand-Forged Damascus Steel Axe pairs a layered Damascus head with a rosewood handle, shaped and fitted by hand from start to finish.

The head is drawn out at the forge rather than cut from bar stock, so its profile, thickness and taper are set by hammer work. Rosewood adds a rich reddish brown handle with grain that differs on every piece.

Together, the etched steel and dark timber give the axe as much presence on a wall as on a chopping block. Buyers after a fantasy inspired design with Norse character can view the Leviathan Norse axe replica.

What Does Hand Forging Mean for the Head?

Hand forging means the head is heated and hammered into shape, with the eye punched and the bit drawn out by hand rather than machined.

Forging packs and aligns the steel along the shape of the head, and small variations in line and surface remain as marks of the process. More heads made the same way sit in our handmade axe collection.

How Does Damascus Get Its Pattern?

Layers of high carbon steel are forge welded, folded and drawn out until the billet holds hundreds of layers.

After shaping and heat treatment, an acid etch darkens one steel more than the other and reveals the pattern. The layers run through the steel, so the pattern stays visible through use and resharpening.

Why Rosewood for the Handle?

Rosewood is dense and naturally oily, which helps it resist moisture and keeps the surface smooth in the hand.

Its weight adds a little mass to the grip end and steadies the swing. Rosewood is also a favourite on our Damascus Bowie knives, where the same warm tone sets off the layered steel.

What Is the Axe Suited For?

Light outdoor work suits it well: splitting kindling, trimming branches and general camp chores.

Many buyers also choose it for display or as a gift, since the Damascus pattern and rosewood grain make each axe a one of a kind piece.

How Should the Axe Be Maintained?

Wipe the head dry after use and keep a light coat of mineral oil on the steel, since Damascus contains high carbon steel and will rust if left damp.

Rub a little oil into the rosewood now and then to keep it from drying out. When the edge dulls, our guide on how to sharpen an axe walks through the full process with a file and puck.

Why Choose Our Hand-Forged Damascus Steel Axe?

Our axe combines a hand forged Damascus head, a dense rosewood handle and fully handmade construction. It suits outdoor use, display and collectors who value a working axe with a distinctive finish.
