Description

Ridgeback D2 Full Tang Hunting Knife

Most hunting knives in this size run a spine around 3mm. The Ridgeback carries 5 to 6mm of D2 tool steel, close to double, ground into a 7.25 inch stonewashed clip point with a raised spine ridge. It was built for the hunter who packs one blade for the whole trip.

Hidden full tang

The blade steel runs the complete length of the lacewood handle, hidden inside the wood and pinned through the pommel with brass. Full tang strength with no exposed steel, which means the knife takes batoning, pommel taps, and lateral load, and your hand never meets a cold steel spine in November.

D2 tool steel, stonewashed

D2 is a high-carbon, high-chromium tool steel. It holds an edge far longer than plain carbon steel and resists rust better, though it is semi-stainless rather than fully stainless, so a wipe and a light oil now and then keeps it right. The stonewash finish hides field scratches and fingerprints instead of showing them off. If you are weighing steel options for a hunter, our guide on Damascus versus carbon steel for hunting knives lays out the honest tradeoffs.

Lacewood handle and Damascus guard

The 5 inch handle is lacewood, with that flecked grain the wood is named for, secure in the hand wet or dry and richer in colour every season you carry it. The guard is hand-forged Damascus, its own pattern on every knife, so no two of these come out the same.

Honest note on what it is

This is the heavy end of our hunting line. If you want something lighter and nimbler for dressing and skinning only, the semi-tang SK-040 shares the same lacewood and Damascus guard in a smaller package. If you want the blade that also splits kindling and handles camp work, this is the one.

Made by hand in Canada

FAQs

What is a hidden full tang, and how is it different from a regular full tang?
On a standard full tang the steel is visible between two handle scales. On a hidden full tang the steel still runs the complete length of the handle, but it passes through the inside of the lacewood and is pinned at the pommel with brass. Same end-to-end strength, clean solid-wood look.
Can this full tang D2 knife handle batoning and heavy camp work?
Yes. The full tang and the 5 to 6mm spine are why this knife exists. It splits kindling, handles hardwood notching, and takes lateral stress that would be off limits for a semi-tang hunter.
Why the stonewashed finish on the D2 blade?
Stonewashing tumbles the blade to a matte grey that hides scratches, fingerprints, and field wear far better than a polish. On a working knife it means the blade still looks right after ten trips.
Does the Ridgeback come with a sheath?
Yes. Handmade leather with embossed panels, a brass button strap, and a belt loop, stitched to fit this blade.
