What Makes Our Custom Damascus Steel Hatchet Stand Out?
Our Custom Damascus Steel Hatchet pairs a hand forged Damascus head with an 18 inch overall length and a fitted leather sheath, made for camp work and outdoor carry.
At 18 inches, the hatchet sits between a compact belt hatchet and a small camp axe, long enough for a fuller swing yet short enough to strap to a pack.
Every head is etched by hand, so the layered pattern on each one is unique. Buyers drawn to a slimmer, Norse inspired profile can compare the custom Damascus Viking tomahawk axe with leather sheath.

Why an 18 Inch Hatchet?
Most hatchets run 12 to 14 inches, which suits one handed work but limits power on thicker wood.
Four extra inches of handle add leverage and head speed, making it easier to split kindling from larger rounds and limb branches without a full size axe. Choking up near the head still gives close control for detail cuts. More forged heads in different lengths sit in our handmade axe collection.
What Gives Damascus Its Pattern?
Damascus starts as layers of high carbon steel forge welded together, then folded and drawn out until the billet holds hundreds of layers.
Once the head is shaped and heat treated, an acid etch darkens one steel more than the other and reveals the pattern. The layers run through the steel itself, so the pattern survives use and resharpening.
What Does the Leather Sheath Do?
The sheath covers the edge during carry, protecting both the bit and anything packed around it.
Leather holds moisture, so the hatchet should come out of the sheath for long term storage and only go back in when the head is clean and dry. A light coat of leather conditioner keeps the sheath supple.
Where Does the Hatchet Fit Outdoors?
Camp chores are its main job: splitting kindling, processing firewood, shaping stakes and clearing small limbs around a site.
Hunters also carry a hatchet for camp work and alongside a fixed blade for field dressing, and our Damascus hunting knives share the same layered steel.
How Should the Hatchet Be Maintained?
Wipe the head dry after use and keep a light coat of mineral oil on the steel, since Damascus contains high carbon steel and will rust if left damp.
Oil the wooden handle a few times a year and store the hatchet somewhere dry with steady humidity. When the edge dulls, our guide on how to sharpen an axe covers file and puck sharpening step by step.
Why Choose Our Custom Damascus Steel Hatchet?
Our hatchet combines a hand forged Damascus head, an 18 inch length for extra reach and a leather sheath for safe carry. It suits camping, hunting camps, bushcraft and collectors who want a working Damascus tool.
