Description
Clean lines, a reinforced point and a handle that only nature could make. A 7 inch D2 tool steel tanto blade, mirror polished and 6mm thick, meets a polished steel guard and creamy camel bone scales. Each knife ships in a thick black buffalo leather sheath, ready for camp, the trail or the display case.
What Is a Tanto Knife?
The tanto traces its roots to the short blades carried in feudal Japan. The modern version, often called the American tanto, keeps the straight spine and replaces the curved tip with an angled secondary point. Two straight edges meet at that point, leaving a thick, reinforced tip with very little belly.
That geometry makes the tanto one of the strongest point designs there is. It pierces tough material, scrapes and handles push cuts without the tip snapping. For a quick look at how the tanto compares with drop point, clip point and other shapes, see our guide to blade shapes.
Why Choose D2 Tool Steel for a Tanto Blade?
D2 is a high carbon, high chromium tool steel prized for edge retention and wear resistance. Roughly 12% chromium makes it semi-stainless, and hardened to 59 to 61 HRC it holds a working edge through long stretches of cutting. Paired with a 6mm spine, the result is a tanto point that stays strong under twisting loads and resists rolling or chipping during hard use.
D2 takes a little longer to sharpen than softer steels, so a diamond plate helps. For a deeper comparison, read our Damascus vs D2 steel guide, or browse more working blades in our D2 steel bowie knives.
What Makes Camel Bone a Good Knife Handle?
Camel bone is a dense, hard natural material with a warm cream colour and fine grain that darkens slowly with handling. Every set of scales is different, so no two handles match. Smooth and comfortable in a bare hand, it pairs with steel pins and a lined lanyard hole for a classic, uncluttered grip.
As a natural material, bone does not like heat, harsh detergents or long soaks, and it can crack if neglected or dropped onto hard surfaces. Treat it well and it will age beautifully. Compare bone with Micarta, wood and other options in our knife handle materials guide.
What Is a Tanto Knife Used For?
- Camp work: cut cordage, open packaging, score and pierce tough materials like leather, rubber and heavy canvas.
- Outdoor utility: scrape bark, clean gear and handle push cuts where a reinforced tip matters. More hard-use blades live in our survival knives collection.
- Collecting and display: a mirror polished blade and natural camel bone make it a striking piece on the shelf or in a gift box.
The tanto trades belly for tip strength, so it is not the best pick for skinning or long slicing cuts. Hunters dressing game will be better served by a drop point or skinner.
How Does This Knife Compare With Our Other Tanto Knives?
Our tanto knives collection covers different steels and sizes. The Ronin San Mai Damascus tanto is a compact everyday carry piece with a pine cone handle. The D2 tanto here is the larger, heavier option: a 7 inch blade with a 6mm spine for outdoor work, finished with classic camel bone.
What Sheath Comes With the Tanto?
Each knife ships in a thick black buffalo leather sheath. Buffalo hide is thicker and denser than standard cowhide, so it protects the blade, holds its shape and stands up to years of belt carry.

How Do You Care for a D2 Knife With a Bone Handle?
Wipe the blade clean and dry after use and keep a light coat of oil on the steel, since D2 is semi-stainless rather than fully stainless. Clean the bone with a soft, barely damp cloth, never soak it, and keep it away from dishwashers, heaters and car dashboards. A little mineral oil or wax on the bone a few times a year helps prevent drying and cracks. Store the knife out of the sheath long term, because leather holds moisture against steel. Our knife care guide covers the details.
Is It Legal to Own a Tanto Knife in Canada?
Fixed blade knives, including tanto designs, are legal to own across Canada and most of the United States and are commonly carried for camping, hunting and outdoor work. Carry rules vary by province, state and city, so check local regulations before you travel. Our guide to knife laws in Canada covers the basics.
