The Fundy runs the other way around. Eight inches of D2 tool steel ground to a 5mm spine, a forged Damascus guard, a black micarta handle over full tang, and a hand-stitched leather sheath with a cord tie. Heavy enough to chop, precise enough to skin, and every one of them ground by hand.

Who Makes It

Every Stag Steel blade is forged and finished by hand by Naqash Minhas, founder and master maker, working steel since 2001. The Fundy is not assembled from bought-in parts. Naqash grinds the D2, forges the Damascus guard, runs the heat treat, fits the micarta, and finishes the knife in our Fredericton shop. What arrives at your door is one maker's hand work rather than a production run.

The Blade: D2 at 5mm

D2 is a high-carbon, high-chromium tool steel with roughly 11-12% chromium, which puts it in semi-stainless territory. Its hard carbide structure is what gives the steel its reputation for edge retention, and why it has stayed a favourite for hard-use field blades long after flashier alloys arrived. At 5mm across the spine and 8 inches long, there is real mass behind the edge. The fuller takes weight out of the middle without costing rigidity, so the balance sits forward enough to chop but not so far that detail work becomes a wrestle. See the rest of the range in our D2 steel bowie knives collection.

The Heat Treat

A blade is only as good as its heat treat, and heat treat is the step budget makers skip because nobody can see it. After grinding, the D2 is hardened and tempered back to a working hardness of 59-61 HRC at the edge. Hard enough to hold a keen edge through a full day of cutting, tough enough to take a knock without chipping out. Pattern and polish tell you nothing about how a knife performs. Hardness and geometry tell you everything.

The Forged Damascus Guard

The guard is forged Damascus rather than stamped stainless, layered and etched so the pattern reads clearly against the satin blade. Beyond the look, a forged guard gives you a solid stop for the index finger during draw cuts. Curious how the layering works? Our maker walks through it in what Damascus steel actually is.

The Handle: Black Micarta, Full Tang

Black micarta is layered canvas set in resin, and it earns its place on working knives because it will not crack, swell, rot, or turn slick when wet. Full tang steel runs the complete 5-inch handle, so there is no stick-tang joint waiting to snap when you baton through a knot. A leather lanyard runs through the butt for wrist retention or hanging in camp. Built to be used rather than babied.

The Sheath

Hand-stitched black leather with a snap strap over the guard and a leather cord tie at the tip. Sized to carry a bowie of this weight on the belt without swinging, and finished to outlast a decade of seasons.

Technical Specifications

Specification

Detail

Knife Name

Fundy Bowie, D2 Steel

Blade Steel

D2 Tool Steel (semi-stainless)

Blade Hardness

59-61 HRC

Blade Style

Clip Point with Fuller

Blade Length

8"

Blade Thickness

5 mm

Guard

Forged Damascus

Handle

Black Micarta, 5", Full Tang

Lanyard

Leather Cord

Sheath

Hand-Stitched Black Leather

Made In

Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada

Who It Suits

Hunters wanting one large blade that skins, quarters, and splits kindling

Campers who would rather carry a heavy bowie than a knife and a hatchet

Collectors after a hand-forged Damascus guard on a working tool steel blade

Anyone replacing a stainless blade that goes dull halfway through the job

Who It Does Not Suit

Buyers wanting a light blade for daily pocket carry

Anyone unwilling to wipe down and oil a semi-stainless blade

Shoppers expecting mirror-polish display finishing over working geometry

Made by Hand in Canada

Forging at Stag Steel has run since 2001, and every blade is ground, heat treated, and finished by hand in New Brunswick.
